Teaching Philosophy

When I think of an effective teacher I see someone who is patient, altruistic, and determined to see their students succeed. As I ponder what it means to be a “good” teacher and who I think of when I think about effective teaching, I realize that an effective teacher is a multidimensional character who must adapt and change to suit their student’s needs. I had a professor who stated “If children do not learn the way you teach, teach the way they learn.” This resonated with me and comes to mind when I consider what makes an educator effective at their job. I hope to create a place where students feel that they can be successful and are supported. Kindness and authentcity are two very important qualities to me and I hope that shows in everything I do,

especially with students. When you represent authenticity to students you create an environment that is more prone to success. In an article by Dewey on Seriousness, Playfulness and the Role of the Teacher he discusses the need for both seriousness and playfulness in the classroom and the importance of the teacher displaying these behaviors. This attitude toward education strengthens teacher and student relationships and I believe strongly in  “purposeful play” creates an experience where children can be intrinsically motivated to learn. I can guarantee that in some ways my opinion will change as I experience different students and changing circumstances, the only thing that I believe will be consistent is my belief that with teaching, like with anything in life, you get out what you put in. The more effort and care you put into you practice the more successful or effective of an educator you will be.
